Microsoft fixes buggy patch for Windows Server 2008
Microsoft fixes buggy patch for Windows Server 2008
As part of its routine Patch Tuesday updates, Microsoft re-released patch MS10-024 for Windows Server 2008 and R2 that was itself causing problems. The revised patch was not mentioned in the company's heads-up alerts issued on Thursday. However, some users are claiming that the patch also breaks Windows Server 2000. Microsoft disagrees.
The Microsoft Security Response Center blog that detailed Patch Tuesday fixes mentions the revised patch:
"We also include one bulletin re-release, MS10-024, in this cycle. The re-release will address the issue previously noted in KB976323, in which the installation of the bulletin reset user-configured settings for SMTP servers on Windows Server 2008-based systems with Internet Information Services (IIS) installed. Users who have previously installed MS01-024 will not be offered the re-released update."
The original patch caused some servers to stop sending e-mails. Microsoft knew the patch broke SMTP when it issued it. Shortly after the patch was pushed out in April, users began reporting the problem to Microsoft's Windows Help forum. Users were flummoxed, saying Microsoft's description of the problem and the fix didn't work. The only workaround they could find for the important patch was to uninstall it, particularly for Windows 2000. Wrote one user identified as "peterhoa":
"... The SMTP server could send mail from ASP and ASP .Net applications but not from other applications that had to be authenticated by the server and it would no longer relay mail from external applications connecting to the SMTP server (eg remote outlook clients). It seemed to be an authentication issue. If I set the authentication method (from the Access tab on properties) to Anonymous I found it would send email correctly, but of course anonymous is not a solution. With both Basic authentication and Windows security packaged selected the SMTP server would not relay mail. The only solution I could find after spending hours on it was to uninstall KB976323. That immediately fixed the problem. ...
The SMTP settings were NOT reset. The server just would not send mail. If the settings were reset I could have simply set them again. This would have been very simple -- I understand what the settings should be. However the settings were not changed at all. The problem was that the patch PREVENTED THE SMTP SERVER ON WINDOWS 2000 FROM RELAYING MAIL."
So, as of today, for Windows Server 2008 customers, the patch works fine, Microsoft says. But for Windows Server 2000 customers who also reported the problem (and support for Windows 2000 had not ended at the time of these reports), Microsoft's official response is to deny the patch caused the problem. Here is what Scott Landry, Exchange Server Product Quality, Customer Support, said:
"Correct, the SMTP settings issue only affects Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2, no other version. Any other issues are probably not directly related to the fix, but if you need our assistance investigating, do not hesitate to contact us."
Since Windows Server 2000 is no longer eligible for updates, if this patch doesn't work, it's a hole that won't be fixed.

Launch Events for Visual Studio 2010 and Office 2010
It’s been a while since I last posted, so I thought I’d blog about a freebie from Microsoft as my triumphant return to the IT Humidor MCTS Certification.
Coming up this month will be the launch of Office 2010, Visual Studio 2010, SQL Server 2008 R2, and SharePoint 2010. To kick things off, Microsoft is holding launch-events in various parts of the country. Be a part of the launch of Microsoft’s new products, (and take home free copies of the software,) by signing up for an event in your area. For those of you who can’t make it to a live event, there will also be a live keynote by Stephen Elop, President of Microsoft’s business division on the launch of the new software suites.
There are two paths for each event, IT Pro and Developer:
Microsoft Announces Beta Exam for 71-680: TS: Windows 7, Configuring
Microsoft has announced that April 27th will be the day that they make the Windows 7 beta exam open to the public. This will be a similar exam to 70-620 which focuses on configuring Vista, and 70-270 which is all about Windows XP Pro. No news yet if the Windows 7 exam will count towards MCSA/MCSE, but you’d better believe that it’ll count towards MCITP: Enterprise Administrator. MCTS Training You will obtain a stand-alone Technology Specialist (TS) designation with the exam, just as with other next-generation Microsoft exams. For some documentation, take a look at the Windows 7 Technical Library Roadmap. For a good discussion on the ins and outs of the exam check out the dedicated thread on Certkingdom.com.

Q. How are exam scores calculated?
A. Here is some general information about exam scoring:
* There is no penalty for guessing. If you choose an incorrect answer, you
simply do not earn credit for that item. No points are deducted for incorrect
answers.
* If a question specifies that you must choose multiple correct answers, you
must choose the exact number of correct answers specified in the question in
order to earn the credit for that item.
* Some questions on the exam might not be included in the calculation of your
score. To gather data to update and improve the quality of Microsoft
Certification exams, we need to present new content to candidates without
counting the results toward their score.
* All Microsoft exams are scaled such that the passing score is 700. The actual
cut score (the number of items you need to answer correctly) is determined by a
group of subject-matter experts. A common misperception is that you must answer
70 percent of the items correctly in order to pass the exam; however, the actual
percentage varies from exam to exam and may be more or less than 70 percent,

a "pass." Any score below 700 is a "fail." Different passing scores do not
reflect different levels of examinee knowledge.
Because of the way Microsoft sets the cut score, we cannot guarantee that an
examinee who scores 900 is more knowledgeable in the exam's topic area than an
examinee who scores 800. We can only say that both examinees are at least
minimally qualified. The same is true for failing scores. An examinee who scores
400 is not necessarily less knowledgeable in the exam's topic area than an
examinee who scores 600. In this case, both examinees fail to meet the minimum
qualifications for the certification. This is why your exam scores do not appear
on your transcript.
Your section scores: The bars on the score report show your relative performance
in the various subject areas covered by the exam--the longer the bar, the
stronger your performance in that areA. The length of the bars does not
correspond to the number of questions you answered correctly on that subject.
Additionally, because the subject areas contain varying numbers of items, the
length of any bar or combination of bars does not correspond directly to your
overall exam score or Pass/Fail status.
Q. What does the score report look like?
A. The score report details the areas in which a candidate demonstrates
technical strength and the areas in which the candidate shows a need for
improvement. The report provides a numeric score for overall exam performance as
well as a bar graph for each subject area of the exam.

Q. What does my numeric score mean?
A. Microsoft provides numeric scaled scores on all exams that provide the
candidate with some indication of their level of performance on the exam.
Microsoft has worked with customers and testing industry experts to create an
exam scale that would be consistent across all exams. The scale requires a
minimum passing score of 700 on all exams. If you receive a score of 700 or
above, it means that you are at least minimally qualified; if you receive a
score below 700, it means that you are not minimally qualified. Because of the
way we set our cut scores, no other judgments about the numerical score obtained
can be made.
Q. What do the bars on the score report mean?
A. The bars indicate how strongly an examinee performed on each skills section
of the exam. The closer the bar comes to the strong end of the continuum, the
higher the score on that skills section. The closer the bar is to the "needs
development" end of the continuum, the lower the score in that skills section.
These results will help all examinees determine areas where they have strengths
and where they need improvement. The skills sections listed on the score report
correspond to those listed in the skills matrix provided in the Exam Preparation
guide.
Q. Does the score report show a numerical score for each section?
A. No. The score report provides a numerical score to reflect pass/fail status
only, in order to prevent confusion. Because exam sections often contain a
different number of questions, combining their numerical results would rarely
provide an accurate final exam result. As an alternative to providing a
numerical score for each section, we provide score bars to show an overview of
areas of strength and weakness relative to overall performance.
On upgrade exams, however, candidates must pass all sections in order to pass
the exam because each section represents a feeder exam. As a result, these
candidates receive a numerical score for each component exam.
Q. The bars on the score report show that I have scored more than 70 percent,
but I didn't pass the exam. Why is this?
A. Each section of the exam may contain a different number of questions;
therefore, the relative results on individual exam sections might not reflect
your final exam result. In other words, there is no one-to-one relationship
between the length of the bars and your pass/fail status.
Q. How many points is each item worth?
A. In most cases, each item is worth one point; however, some questions or
question types may be worth more than one point. Microsoft does not provide
information about how many points specific items are worth.
Q. Is there a penalty for guessing? Are points deducted for incorrect answers?
A. No. Points are not deducted for incorrect answers; if you answer incorrectly,
you will simply not earn the credit associated with answering correctly.

Q. I scored zero in one of the sections. How is this possible?
A. The number of questions that appear for each section is determined by subject
matter experts. As a result, some sections have more questions than others. It
is not uncommon to score zero when a section contains relatively few questions.
Q. I experienced significant delays between some of the questions. Did these
delays impact the calculation of my score?
A. In some cases, you may experience a delay of up to a minute while your next
question loads. Prometric's software is designed to accommodate this event. A
delay between questions does not impact the responses you have recorded. Your
exam will be scored correctly regardless of delays between questions.
Q. Can I find out whether I answered a specific question correctly, or whether
this answer affected my pass/fail status?
A. No. By not providing this information, we are better able to maintain exam
security.
Q. Where can I find additional information about my areas of weakness?
A. Although Microsoft Certification exams provide feedback about the areas where
examinees need to develop their skills further, Microsoft Certification exams
are not designed to provide detailed feedback. We encourage you to use practice

A. We no longer require a "refresh" or recertification of the MCITP credential within three years. To better meet our customers’ needs, we now retire a certification when mainstream support for the related technology phases out. If you earned an MCITP certification before the policy change, no action is required—the updated policy applies to your certification, which will remain valid until mainstream support for the related technology ends.
Q. Does MCSA equate to MCITP: Server Administrator and does MCSE equate to MCITP: Enterprise Administrator?
A. No, not exactly. The MCITP on Windows Server 2008 certification requires a new skill set—in some cases, a more robust one—that differs from the skill set needed for MCSA and MCSE certifications.
* MCITP: Server Administrator certification covers more operations-related job skills than the MCSA certification.
* MCITP: Enterprise Administrator maps to an actual job role profile, whereas the MCSE certification does not. The latter combines technology and job skills.
Q. Are the MCTS and MCITP certifications replacing the MCSA and MCSE credentials?
A. No. The MCSA and MCSE certifications are not being replaced. There is no change to the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 tracks and certifications. The MCTS and MCITP certifications are for Windows Server 2008.
Q. Am I a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) if I earn an MCITP certification?
A. Yes and no. The term MCP is used both as a general term for all Microsoft Certified Professionals and as the name of a credential. As an MCITP, you become part of the Microsoft Certified Professional community, with access to all related benefits, information, and activities. You do not earn a credential titled "MCP". You should use the MCITP credential on your resume and in business collateral, which indicates your specialty and shows that you are a member of the MCP community.
Q. How long will my certification be valid?
A. All next-generation certifications, including Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS), MCITP, and Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD), will retire when Microsoft discontinues mainstream support for the related technology. After a credential retires, it will still appear on your transcript but will be listed as retired. In most cases, an upgrade path will be available to individuals holding that credential so they can demonstrate their skills on the newest version of the technology, without completing all exams associated with the new credential. This policy does not apply to legacy credentials, including Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), and Microsoft Certified Applications Developer (MCAD).

Let us say that you have your MCSA on Windows Server 2003, and you want to
upgrade your certification to Windows Server 2008, or you are not certified at
all on Windows Server 2003 and want to earn your
MCTS on Windows Server 2008. The first
thing to remember is that this is a series of new certifications and while there
is an upgrade path from Server 2003 to Server 2008, you are NOT earning an MCSE
on Windows Server 2008,
rather an MCTS or MCITP on windows
Server 2008. Also remember that the era of the
MCSA/MCSE certifications has ended –
it is now MCTS and MCITP (and others beyond the scope covered here) and have an
entirely different focus.
MCITP Online Training

MCITP Online Exams
The Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) has a different focus
then the Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional (MCITP), and
the former is not a prerequisite for the latter (nor is it a “lesser”
certification!). The MCTS certification
is aimed at IT professionals who work with a specific Microsoft product or
platform. An IT pro who has earned an MCTS is expected to possess depth and
breadth of knowledge
and skills on a particular product or platform. They are expected to manage and

with the day-to-day operations and short-term planning rather than long-term

There are three MCTS tracks available on Windows Server 2008:

2008 Network Infrastructure Configuration, and MCTS: Windows Server 2008
Applications Infrastructure Configuration. You can take each of the tests
individually, or you can take the upgrade path by taking only one test. The

normally certificate holder go for four main exam + one client OS exam & then two of design exams... Cuz... one can pass as design n other as elective exam....
but here you can select other elective exam of your choice...
Or you can select these 2 exams...
because all study require for these exams cover in four core exams.. so u don't have to study a lot for these exams..
