Nokia adopting Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 means two companies with very long smartphone histories are coming together. Nokia came out with its first Communicator smartphone in 1996. The first Pocket PC Phone surfaced in 2002, but it was preceded by a long line of Microsoft-powered PDAs.
Since then, the two companies' fortunes have waxed and waned. Nokia had a huge overall market share in the U.S. up until about 2004, when it entered a steady decline. Microsoft's Windows Mobile was our favorite smartphone OS until the iPhone got apps in mid-2008. Windows Phone 7 put Microsoft back in the game. Now it may bring Nokia back to the U.S., too.
