Google’s 2012 April Fools’ Day Pranks

From Nintendo Maps to YouTube DVD collections

April 1 is typically one of the most annoying days on the Internet, as just about everyone feels the need to subject us to their not-so-clever “OMG I JUST PWN3D U!” pranks. But fortunately, Google is a lot cleverer than most typical Internet denizens and routinely comes up with some of the more amusing pranks every year around this time. In this slideshow we’ll guide you through Google’s top April Fools’ Day pranks of 2012, including Nintendo-style Maps, Morse Code Gmail and multitasking Chrome (relive Google’s 2011 April Fools’ collection.)

8-Bit Google Maps for the original Nintendo
Google has worked hard over the years to make its Maps application the most detailed and up-to-date one anywhere on the Web. But what about users who haven’t bought a piece of electronics since getting a Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1988? Well for those users, Google created an 8-bit version of Maps that makes travelling throughout the world looks like playing “Zelda II.”

The complete YouTube on DVD
YouTube has brought us a lot of fond memories over the years, from Keyboard Cat to Rick Astley to Chris Crocker’s valiant defense of Britney Spears. And now, Google is offering you all your favorite YouTube moments on DVD. As in, all of them, sent to you in several large cardboard boxes. The best feature of this gag is the ability to snail-mail a cardboard thumbs-up symbol to the video creator’s home address.

Morse-Code Gmail
Yeah, touchscreen keyboards are still somewhat awkward to use. So why not switch to a system that gives you just two buttons to work with: A dot and a dash? Yes, Google is going really, really retro and bringing back Morse code for mobile Gmail. Siri is shaking in her boots, I bet.

Rotary Phone website optimization
Sure, smartphones are all the rage today and every business is working overtime to make sure that their website also delivers a top-notch mobile experience. But what about the .00001% of the population that still relies on rotary phones to make their calls? How will you reach this key market group of bitter misanthropic Luddite shut-ins? Google’s Mobile Ads team has the answer as it’s designed a program to “to help you prepare for the return of rotary,” whenever the heck that might happen.

Interplanetary Analytics
While most Google pranks utilize retro technology for laughs, the Analytics team has decided to launch us into the future with an Analytics system designed for interplanetary space travel. As a test example, Google asks you to imagine that you have “a chain of taco stands and [have] noticed many users visiting your website from the Mars outpost” meaning that you might want to “make a business case to begin expanding your business to serve Mars colonists.”

Self-driving racing cars
This certainly takes the human element out of your typical NASCAR race. The good news about this is that fiery race car crashes will no longer result in the tragic loss of human life. The bad news is that one of America’s most popular competitive events will be reduced to a driving version of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. Progress has its drawbacks...

Google Fiber bar
For the uninitiated, Google has been building out a high-speed fiber network in Kansas City that will deliver average download speeds of 100Mbps to area homes within the next year. The company has also apparently been building the Ultimate Fitness Bar that will help you win bicycle races and other feats of athletic glory.

Google Street ‘Roo
Google’s Aussie team decided to chip into the April Fools’ Day fun by creating the Google Street Kangaroo to provide you with real-time traffic updates via its mounted head camera. Of course, the ‘roo’s live updates aren’t for those with motion sickness since its camera work is best described as somewhat bouncy. At any rate, who doesn’t love looking at a cute marsupial with an oversized camera attached to its head?

Google Chrome two-mouse multitasking
Multitasking is a staple of modern life, so much so that we often have difficulty jus… oooo, I just got a new high score in “Angry Birds Space!”… uh, as I was saying, multitasking is pretty important to the modern work environment. As such, Google has given Google Chrome the ability to handle not just one, but two mice! Wow! Now you can try to do your work while… ooooo, I just finished downloading the new “Game of Thrones” episode on iTunes!

Microsoft's ads, humor boost consumer opinion of IE

But tech fans still think less of the browser than does the general public

Computerworld - Microsoft's recent campaigns touting Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), including a tongue-in-cheek promotion it unveiled last week, have moved IE's quality perception needle for U.S. adults, according to a brand quality measurement company.

"When we see an inflection [in the quality scores], we look at other events that are happening," said Ted Marzilli, the global manager for BrandIndex, a brand awareness and consumer perception service of U.K.-based YouGov.

While BrandIndex does not gauge reaction to specific ad campaigns, Marzilli called Microsoft's marketing moves "a contributing factor."

IE's perception index is at its highest level since January 2011, said Marzilli.

MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at certkingdom.com

Microsoft has been running national television ads for IE9 and a week ago kicked off a "browser you loved to hate" website and video. In the latter Microsoft poked fun at computer enthusiasts who obsessively uninstalled IE from friends' and family members' PCs.

The ads and self-deprecating humor seem to have won over some people.

From March 5-14, BrandIndex measured a 10-point jump in the quality perception rating of IE among U.S. adults, and a nine-point increase in the group that identified themselves as early technology adopters. By March 16, IE's quality rating was 50 among U.S. adults, 44 among early adopters.

Not surprisingly, IE's rating is regularly higher in the general population than it is among early adopters, who have long criticized the browser as behind the times.

Mozilla's Firefox, meanwhile, also saw a jump in its BrandIndex score, ending March 16 at 44 for early adopters, 28 for the general public. Unlike IE, Firefox's early adopter score tracks above that of the general population, belying its standing as a more flexible alternative.

"Early adopters and fast followers have a more favorable impression of Firefox than the general population," said Marzilli. "That's in tune with those who consider themselves advanced users, who are usually more eager to explore new technology, and may want to use a more obscure browser because that separates them from their peers."

BrandIndex measures browser brand quality by interviewing 5,000 U.S. adults 18 and older daily, pulling the people polled from a pool of about 1.5 million Americans. Scores range from 100 to -100, and are compiled by subtracting negative feedback from positive, meaning that a score of zero is equal parts positive and negative.

BrandIndex doesn't ask people their take on Google's Chrome.

It's difficult to assess whether the spike in perception that BrandIndex reported has translated into more IE users.

But according to Irish Web metrics company StatCounter, IE's U.S. usage share for the seven-day stretch of March 9-15 was 42.3%, eight-tenths of a percentage point higher than the seven days prior. Since March 15, however, IE's average daily share has dropped to 40.8%.

Firefox's U.S. share also moved slightly this month, hitting a seven-day low of 21.3% the same week that IE peaked.

Linux 3.3 released after minor delay

MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Networking, new hardware support and Android re-integration added to Linux kernel

Version 3.3 of the Linux kernel was released on Sunday, adding support for a new processor architecture, re-integrating the Android code base back into the main line, and introducing networking improvements.

EARLIER: Linux kernel 3.3 delayed

A virtual switching package called Open vSwitch was added to the new variant of the kernel, in a move meant to provide more robust VM configuration options compared to the existing Linux bridge. This could be particularly helpful to companies that maintain heavily virtualized environments. Combined with improvements in the way Linux handles complex network traffic, this could make version 3.3 a substantial step forward for the data center.

Support for the Texas Instruments C6X family of single- and multiple-core processors was also integrated into Linux 3.3, as was a new type of bootloader that allows a single kernel image to be used for both EFI and BIOS.

However, the most notable change may have been the reincorporation of most of the Android mobile platform back into the main Linux tree. The decision to do so was reached at the Kernel Summit in December 2011, according to LWN, which added that the move came as something of a surprise.

The full release was expected roughly a week ago, but kernel maintainer Linus Torvalds imposed a slight delay, saying that a number of minor issues needed to be addressed.

"Things did indeed calm down during the last week," he wrote in the announcement.

Apple joins iPad trade-in bandwagon, offers competitive deals

As third-gen tablet debut nears, Apple outsources offers for used iPads and iPad 2s

Computerworld - With the retail debut of the new iPad just a day away, Apple has joined a slew of other companies eager to buy used iPads.

On Wednesday, Apple added iPad 2 trade-ins to its Reuse and Recycling program, which exchanges used hardware for Apple gift cards.

The move pits Apple against the likes of eBay's Instant Sale buy-back service, and firms such as Gazelle and NextWorth that specialize in buying smartphones and tablets.

Reuse and Recycling is only available to U.S. customers. Apple outsources its electronics recycling and buy-back programs to PowerON, a Roseville, Calif. company.

Full coverage: iPad

On Thursday, Apple offered $205 for a used 16GB Wi-Fi iPad 2.

The quote was competitive with other buy-back vendors.

Gazelle, for example, quoted $180 for the same iPad 2 in "good" condition, or $200 for a "flawless" tablet. (Gazelle has said that most incoming iPads meet the requirements for the latter label.)

Meanwhile, NextWorth offered $200 for a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad 2 in "good" shape, or $210.50 for one in "like new" condition.

eBay's Instant Sale site, which generates quotes for used iPads and other electronic devices, also offered $200 for the iPad 2.

Some of the dealers' prices have slipped since last week when Computerworld last covered tablet trade-in trends. On March 9, for example, NextWorth was offering $215 for a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad 2 in good condition, while eBay, then running a deal that expired Saturday, said it would pay $290 for the same device.

In return for a used iPad, Apple sends sellers an Apple gift card valid only for purchases made at an Apple retail store or orders placed through its online store.

Other buy-back vendors are more flexible: Gazelle will send sellers an Amazon gift card -- it automatically adds another 5% of the quoted price -- or a check, or deposits the money in the seller's PayPal account.

NextWorth offers checks, a Target gift card or PayPal deposits. And it shouldn't be a surprise that eBay only does transfers to PayPal, the electronic payment service it owns.

Trade-in volume continues to climb. Yesterday, Gazelle said it had seen an eight-fold increase in trade-ins since Apple unveiled the new iPad last week.

Although supplies are already tight -- the current wait time between ordering and shipping is two to three weeks -- Apple will sell the new tablet in its own retail stores starting at 8 a.m. Friday.
